    Abstract: Quantum error correction (QEC) and continuous symmetries, two key notions in quantum information and physics, are incompatible with each other. We systematically study the competition between QEC and continuous symmetries in a quantitative manner. We derive various trade-o? relations between the QEC infidelity and three types of symmetry violation measures defined respectively using the violation of global covariance, local covariance and charge conservation. We introduce the notions of charge fluctuation and gate implementation error and employ techniques in approximate QEC, quantum metrology and quantum resource theory for the derivation. From the perspective of fault-tolerant quantum computing, we demonstrate fundamental limitations on transversal logical gates. We also analyze the behaviors of two near-optimal codes: a parametrized extension of the thermodynamic code, and quantum Reed–Muller codes.

    Speaker: Sisi Zhou is a postdoc at Caltech. She recently graduated from Department of Physics at Yale University. Her work focuses on quantum error correction, quantum metrology, and the interplay between them.
